The Master of Arts in Peace and Security Studies is an academic programme designed for the Fellows of the
National Institute for Security Studies (NISS), Abuja, under a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) for affiliation
between the Centre for Peace and Strategic Studies, University of Ilorin and the Institute.
The programme is meant to further expose the Fellows of the Institute for Security Studies (fsi) to rigorous theoretical
and practical training in Peace and Security related issues. This is expected to equip the students with the requisite knowledge and
field experiences on conflict management, peace building, security intelligence and strategic studies.
C. Admission Requirements
i. Candidates must have at least a Credit in English Language and Mathematics in ‘O’ level result or a Credit in English or Mathematics if the result was earned before 2015. All other requirements set by the Postgraduate School of the University of lIorin.
ii. Candidates must also possess a first degree in any field with minimum of Second Class (Lower Division).
iii. The M.A. Peace and Security Studies is OPEN ONLY TO Participants of the Executive Intelligence Management Course (EIMC) of the National Institute for Security Studies, Abuja.
D. Duration of the
The programme shall run for 18 calendar months all of which must have been spent at the National Institute for Security Studies, Abuja.
2. Master of Arts in Peace and Strategic Studies
A. Introduction
The programme is designed for candidates who applied for the National Institute for Security Studies’ (NISS) Master of Arts in Peace and Strategic Studies, which is affiliated to the University of Ilorin. The programme encompasses
courses in Peace Studies, Strategic and Security Studies. The programme is meant to further expose the candidates who have participated in the Executive Intelligence Management Course (EIMC) of the National Institute for Security Studies
(NISS), Abuja, to an enduring theoretical and practical training in Peace, Security and Strategic-related issues. This is expected to equip the students with requisite knowledge and field experiences on conflict management, peace building, security and strategic studies. There are Core and Elective courses for students to register..

3. Master of Arts in Peace and Development Studies
A. Introduction
The programme is to provide mainstream training in Peace Studies at the Master’s level in Nigeria and the African Continent. The CPSS realises the need to have capable hands to serve humanity as scholars and practitioners in the fields of Conflict
Management and Peace-Building, Peace and Development Journalism, Peace and Environment Studies as well as Security and Strategic Studies. The centre immerses these areas in a carefully designed interdisciplinary programme that consist of Core and Elective
courses for each of the specialisation. Each student is expected to select courses towards deepening her/his expertise in any of the following four academic areas of specialisation:.
Conflict Management and Peacebuilding (CMP)
Security and Strategic Studies (SSS)
Peace and Environment Studies (PES)
Peace and Development Journalism (PDJ)
C. Admission Requirements
i.Candidates must have at least a Credit in English Language and Mathematics in 'O' level result and meet all other requirements set by the Postgraduate School of the University of Ilorin.
ii. ii.The M.A in Peace and Development Studies programme is open to candidates with a first degree in any field with a minimum of Second Class (Lower Division).
iii. iii.Experience in Peace Practice and Conflict Management and in the Security Sector will be added advantage.
D. Duration of the
The Full-time programme shall run for a minimum of 18 calendar months and a maximum of 24 calendar months.
The Part-time programme shall run for a minimum of 24 calendar months and a maximum of 36 calendar months.
ii.The programme shall run for 18 calendar months, all of which must be spent at the National Institute for Security Studies (NISS), Abuja.
4. Doctoral Degree (Ph.D.) in Peace and Development Studies
A. Introduction
The programme is to provide mainstream training in Peace Studies at Doctoral level (Ph.D.) in Nigeria and the West African sub-region. The CPSS realizes the need to have capable hands to serve humanity as scholars and practitioners in
the fields of Peace and Development, Security and Strategic Studies, Conflict Management, and Peace-building. The centre immerses these areas in a carefully designed trans-disciplinary programme towards envisioning and evolving a new world
order that is cosmopolitan with non-violent values, overwhelming security consciousness and threat analysis skills, and conflict management skills.
C. Admission Requirements
i.Any five Credits including English and Mathematics in humanities and Science, Arts, and Social Sciences while candidates with either credit in English and Mathematics before 2015 are also eligible for admission.
ii.ii.The Ph.D. programme in Peace and Development Studies is open to candidates with M.A degree and with a minimum weighted average Score of 60% or M.Phil. degree programme (with Ph.D. grade) obtained in Peace and
Development Studies, Peace and Conflict Studies, Peace and Security Studies, Peace and Strategic Studies..
iii.Experience in Peace Practice and Conflict Management and in the Security Sector will be added advantage.
D. Duration of the
i.Full Time:
The duration of the Ph.D. full time programme is a minimum of 36 calendar months (or three years) and a maximum of 54 calendar months (or four and half academic sessions). The programme can be extended for two (2) consecutive periods for twelve (12) months or two
academic sessions. The overall period of Full time Ph.D. programme including the extension period is seventy-eight months or six and a half (6 1/2) academic session.
ii.Part Time:
The Ph.D. part time programme shall run a minimum of 48 calendar months (or four years academic sessions) and a maximum of 66 calendar months (or five and a half academic sessions). The programme can be extended for two (2) consecutive periods for twelve (12) months or two academic sessions. The overall period of Part-time Ph.D. programme, including the extension period is seven and a half (71/2) years.
For each of the mode, candidates are expected to conduct an independent research under the supervision of an assigned academic staff in the Centre for Peace or National Institute of Security Studies..
