ADMISSION PROCEDURE

Admission for Master and Doctoral Degree programmes is done once in a year. PG academic calendar at the National Institute for Security Studies runs between March, when newly admitted students register for the session, till February, when all academic activities for the session are expected to end. Advertisement for admission into PG programmes is usually published in a national daily as well as in the Institute Bulletin in the first week of December of every year. Applicants are given up to six weeks to complete the online application for admission, and are expected to submit printed copies of the Application Forms to the PG School with copies of their credentials and other supporting documents such as transcript and references, not later than 2 weeks after the closure of the online application. Qualifying examination and/or Interactive/Interview session for the Master degree programme and Doctoral degree programme, respectively, would be conducted and successful candidates will be contacted. Upon receipt of admission notice, candidates are expected to accept the offer within two weeks with the payment of an Acceptance Fee that gives them the guarantee that they are on their way to becoming PG students of the Institute in affiliation with University of Ilorin.

For Ph.D Candidates Only

Admission/Graduation Requirements

The following are the procedures/requirements for the award of Ph.D. Peace and Development Studies:
i.Expression of interest by a prospective candidate through the purchase and completion of Application form;
ii.Submission of a proposed research topic to the Centre on the Institute Academic Board;
iii.Invitation for interview and proposal defence to be conducted by the Academic Board of the Institute;
iv.Admission notice and letter from the Postgraduate School;
v.Registration of admitted candidate for the programme;
vi.Allocation of duly registered student to supervisors;
vii.Attendance of classes for two of the five registered courses;
PDS 903: Advanced Research Methodology (1st Semester)
PDS 902: Advanced Issues in Peace and Development Studies (2nd Semester).
viii. A Ph.D. candidate must have a minimum of 60% in the two courses before allowed to proceed to the next stage of the programme (i.e Research protocol);
ix. Submission and successful defence of Ph.D. Research Protocol and approved by the Board of Postgraduate School;
x. Score 60% or above in the Ph.D. Research Protocol to be allowed to proceed to Ph.D. thesis;
xi. Correction of successful protocol within three weeks;
xii. Presentation of corrected protocol for External Review process;
xiii. Submission of protocol certified by the Ethical Committee to the Postgraduate School for approval and transition of candidate for field work;
xiv. Presentation of a minimum of two (2) seminar papers on relevant research theme;
xv. Successful defence of Post-field report (Internal defence);
xvi. Correction of certified Ph.D. post-field report;
xvii. Approval of certified Ph.D. Post-field report by the Correction Compliance Committee;
xviii. Registration of title of Ph.D. thesis and processed to the Centre, Faculty Boards and approved by the Board of Postgraduate School;
xix. Notice of approval of Registration of title by the Postgraduate School to the candidate and the Centre;
xx. Composition of panel of Examiners for Oral Defence/Examination of Ph.D. thesis by the Centre and approved by the Postgraduate School;
xxi. Successful Oral defence of the Ph.D. thesis before a panel which include an external examiner appointed by the Board of Postgraduate School;
xxii. Post External Defence correction (to be effected within three (3) weeks;
xxiii. Submission of Ph.D. thesis to the Postgraduate School;
xxiv. Approval of Ph.D. result by the University Senate.
